You Are The Sum Total Of The Five People You Spend The Most Time With - The People You Know?

Have you every taken the time to think of or write down the names of all the people you have known? When you you complete this exercise, the web of connections throughout your lifetime is wide.

Yet, HOW MANY ARE STILL INVOLVED IN YOUR LIFE TODAY?

Now ask yourself, HOW MANY HAVE FADED AWAY FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER?

Whether they are distant family members, old neighbors, friends from school, ex-coworkers and other casual acquaintances you have met along the way, they have all in some shape, way or form influenced or impacted your life positively or negatively.

It is important to know who you know now and have known in the past...it encompasses who you are today.

Now an even more important question is; WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW THAT YOU PRESENTLY DON"T KNOW NOW?

When you ask yourself who you know now or who you would like to know, think about your current state of business and what you would like it to be in the future.

According to Jeffrey Gitomer:

"Who you know encompasses who you can presently connect with easily and obviously. The better you know them, the easier it is to make a connection. How well you know them determines how early or how late you can call them on the phone.

There is power in who you know. Not just the connection power. Growth power. Success Power. Even fulfillment power."

That's why it's critical to your career to know:

  1. Who do you know?
  2. How well are you connected?
  3. Do you know how to make a connection?
  4. Who knows you?

Who knows you and did you make a connection?

It's more than just knowing someone, it's making a critical connection with the people you want to know and need to know.

It's the connectors that succeed long term in the mortgage and real estates business. Yet connecting is more about giving than receiving and that's where so many people striving to be a connector fail.

Success Leaves Clues

On to business...When I say that success tends to leave some clues, I'm not telling you anything you don't know (especially if you're a normal reader of The Mortgage Cicerone).  I find myself (like many of you probably do) reading as much as I can about those who have shaped the world and set the bar for accomplishment.

Charlie_2I'm a big fan of Jeffrey Gitomer.  Recently Jeffrey wrote a great article on Charlie Tremendous Jones.  For those of you who may not know who Charlie Tremendous Jones is, he's been an inspirational speaker and writer for many years.   Here's Gitomer's take on what makes Charlie so damn Tremendous (he seems like a pretty cool cat if you ask me):

"Charlie Tremendous Jones has a mantra: 'The only difference between where you are now and where you'll be next year are the books you read and the people you meet.' He has said it for more than 50 years and has influenced hundreds of thousands of people with that single sentence. Me included.

Charlie Jones has dedicated his life to learning new things, meeting new people, inspiring new people with his words and giving away thousands of books ... so he could sell millions of books.

But Charlie's charisma is the most compelling aspect of his character. It's instant. He doesn't just shake your hand; he hugs you with a capital H. No one who ever meets him forgets him. Everyone who meets him is touched by him -- mentally and physically. If you've ever been hugged by Charlie Tremendous Jones, you know exactly what I'm talking about."

Gitomer then summarized what he felt were characteristics of Charlie.   In classic Gitomer style, he calls it 'The 12.5 Characteristics of Charlie':

1. He's so likable, he's lovable.

2. He makes you laugh and think at the same time.

3. His presentation skills are so excellent, you're compelled to listen.

4. His ideas are simple, not simplistic.

5. His concepts are transferable, so you can use them the minute you hear them.

6. He reads to you and talks to you kind of like your mom or dad did -- only better.

7. His spirit is ever present. His spirit comes from his spirituality.

8. His honesty and integrity are silent but evident.

9. He always has a song in his heart and on his lips.

10. He's not just smart, he's not just knowledgeable -- he's wise. And his wisdom has come from the books he has read and the people he has met.

11. He has learned that by giving one he receives 10. He looks at it as returning some of what you owe for the blessings you have received.

12. His loyalty to others -- including Gloria, his wife of more than 50 years -- is as genuine as his loyalty to himself.

12.5. He doesn't just teach it. He lives it.'

After seeing what success looks like, how do you measure up?   What could you improve on?
